The easiest, most cost-effective, and most popular way to quickly make your book available for sale is by putting it up on Amazon through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
How does KDP work?
KDP allows you to self-publish eBooks, paperback, and hardcover books for free. They give you direct access to your book on Amazon, and allow you to create a product detail page for your book. It also gives you the option to expand your book’s availability on a global scale, making it more accessible to readers around the world. Publishing with KDP gives you full rights to your book, which is not something a traditional publishing house typically allows.
When someone orders your book on Amazon, KDP:
- takes the order
- prints the book
- binds the book
- packages the book
- and then ships it to the customer!
They take their ‘payment’ by way of a portion of each sale: KDP gets 40% of the book’s cost, while you retain 60%.

Let’s imagine that you have a 6 x 9 black & white book with 250 pages that you have priced at $15.99:
We see by using the KDP Cost and Royalty Calculator that the cost to print your book is $3.97 so: (Royalty rate x list price) – printing costs = royalty
Your Royalty:
60% x $15.99 = $9.59
$9.594 – $3.97 = $5.62
KDP’s Cut:
40% x $15.99 = $6.39
$6.39 – $3.97 = $2.42
